Wayne Rooney didn’t get the start he was hoping for in Birmingham City’s 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough on Saturday, and he issued a strong message to his teammates.

Middlesbrough spoiled Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham City debut, as the home team won their fifth straight game and all three points thanks to a late goal from Morgan Rogers. After the match, Rooney lost his temper and became enraged, accusing his teammates of not being good enough after being outplayed by his old Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick.

Despite having worked together for the most of Rooney and Carrick’s United careers, they were rivals on the touchline on Saturday.

The Championship season saw Middlesbrough off to a rocky start, but they have since turned the circle and won their past five games in the English second division. Despite finishing eighth in the table, Birmingham made a surprising move when they fired manager John Eustace, but Rooney was an obvious choice for the position as soon as the Club’s American owners gained control.

The ownership believes in Rooney, and the late NFL great Tom Brady is also an investment and probably had some input in his hiring. However, the English legend’s start was disappointing, and he made no secret of his emotions following the match.

Birmingham has struggled to score goals this season, even though they had won five of their previous eleven games prior to Rooney’s arrival. Rooney was hired by the Club’s leadership because they believed he would instill a fearless style of play in the team. However, Rooney became irate after the game when his players went back to their previous habits.

“We have to improve. After the game, Rooney stated, “We need to get better and more proficient with the ball. “We played decent defense, but Middlesbrough gives you trouble; we know they’re a strong team.”

“We have to improve when we have the ball in possession. We must become more at ease receiving the ball while being marked so that we may be more inventive. After Middlesbrough made it through, I thought they had some strong moments in the match, and we started to take some control of it.

It’s Rooney’s third managerial role after starting his coaching career with Derby County, before moving to Washington to lead the MLS franchise D.C. United. His biggest challenge yet is to get Birmingham back into the Premier League, a division they haven’t played in since 2010.
