When Liverpool travels to Brighton to play in the Premier League this weekend, five first-team players will be absent due to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota’s suspensions.
Curtis Jones’ appeal against his red card against Tottenham was denied, which has caused Jurgen Klopp to face a difficult selection situation.
In Saturday’s violent 2-1 Premier League loss for Liverpool, Jones received a red card. Following a VAR intervention in the 26th minute, the Liverpool midfielder’s original yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma was changed to a red.
Liverpool filed an appeal against the ruling, but on Tuesday learned that their appeal had been denied. As a result, Jones will now serve a three-match suspension in the Premier League. He is unable to travel to play Brighton on Sunday, though he could play against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday.
Diogo Jota, who was also sent off against Spurs, is also suspended for the Seagulls encounter. In the last minutes of the first half in north London, Jota received two yellow cards, reducing Liverpool to nine men.
He will now be suspended for one game, making him eligible to play in the Merseyside Derby on October 21. Before being able to play again against Luton on November 5, Jones must miss that contest as well as the Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on October 29.
The two suspensions are a big setback for Klopp, who is also dealing with ailments. Injured during Spurs’ first-half stoppage time, Cody Gakpo was replaced at intermission. Klopp was heartbroken to lose him after seeing him later limping and sporting a brace.
The biggest issue, in my opinion, was that Cody Gakpo was injured during a free kick before he scored, and he is now walking down the hallway while wearing a brace. To be honest, that’s my biggest issue right now. We may have lost a third player in addition to the two players we lost due to red cards. Therefore, it is evident that we must deal with that.
If a severe injury, he said, “Perhaps, I don’t know. He was braced. Even though he had just scored, he still felt the impact of that shot. It came from the earlier foul.
The injured teammates Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara are both absent for Liverpool. Liverpool is taking care not to worsen the little calf issue that Bajcetic has since returning from a long-term injury.

Without pressuring him, Klopp added, “We try everything to get him up to speed.” We have a very particular plan for him, but the fact that he ended up getting another one is disheartening for both of us as well as for him. Therefore, we need to remove him a little. Other than playing, he can work on pretty much anything else. That would be it, I suppose.
