Shawn Michaels recently expressed dismay over Mustafa Ali’s release, and a brand-new Fightful Select report makes it very clear that “The Heartbreak Kid” had significant plans for the former Retribution leader. The “WWE NXT” North American Championship was supposed to be Ali’s to take home at No Mercy on September 30, the report claimed.
Before No Mercy, Ali was supposed to defeat Dragon Lee in the North American Championship bout, setting up a Triple Threat bout at the Premium Live Event where Ali was supposed to prevail. Trick Williams was quickly booked into a match with North American Champion Dominik Mysterio as a result of Ali’s unexpected main roster release, which came at the same time as a flurry of other main roster releases, including those of fellow “NXT” featured talent Dana Brooke. Ali’s misfortune was Williams’ gain as Trick won the match with “Dirty Dom” and took home the title.
Ali requested his release from WWE more than a year ago, and although WWE initially rejected, Ali will now be a free agent in 2024. After Ali’s exit, Michaels praised him, saying that his stint in “NXT” had equipped him for success outside of WWE. Ali expressed optimism for his future in WWE earlier this year when he said he wanted to tell a “real story” there, and it appeared that he was about to on “NXT.”Ali’s quest for the North American Championship would have been his first in the WWE, despite multiple rebrandings and abandoned proposals.
