According to Piers Morgan, if Arsenal wants to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title this season, they must recruit Ivan Toney.
During a call with talkSPORT on Monday, Morgan—a devoted Gunners fan—explained why Mikel Arteta’s team needs to sign the Brentford forward in January.
Toney, who was just reinstated to Brentford training after serving an eight-month suspension for violating betting regulations, is currently prohibited from competition until January 2024.
Thomas Frank, the club’s manager, said that Toney will be ready to play in January after a 16-week preparation period.
Morgan, however, wants Arsenal to act during the upcoming transfer window.
“I think we have to go and get Ivan Toney or someone like him in January because we need a proper striker,” he stated.
Every Arsenal supporter is aware of this, and in my opinion, we have been deluding ourselves for too long by thinking that we can live without one.
Morgan mentioned Kai Havertz, who has struggled since joining from Chelsea in the summer, when asked how they could afford a prospective move for the England international.
“We could sell Kai Havertz and get our £70 million back!” he exclaimed.
“When people ask me what I would have done, I respond that I would have gone to Napoli and offered £150 million for Osimhen, to which they all respond, ‘That’s ridiculous,’ but we just spent close to half of that amount on Havertz, who doesn’t appear to be of the caliber we need to win the league.
“The thought seems to me to be pretty minimal thinking. We went and got the amazing Declan Rice. Saliba was humming again yesterday, Odegaard is superb when he’s on form, and Martinelli has been sorely missed. We have some great players on that team.
“We have a lot of great players, but without a proper striker, you can’t win the league,” Morgan continued. I’m sorry, but the reality is that if we’re serious, we must go in January and start winning. Arsenal fans may not want to hear this.
Opinions on Morgan’s request for a transfer? Is Toney the best person to challenge Arsenal in the title battle this year?
