Why aren’t the Premier League games between Chelsea and Liverpool on television?

Numerous Premier League teams will need to adjust to their Thursday-Sunday schedules for the remainder of the 2023–24 season due to the return of European football.

Due to their fifth-place finish in the previous season, Brighton and West Ham, two other English teams, have joined Liverpool in the Europa League rather than the Champions League.

The only Premier League team competing in the Europa Conference League is Aston Villa, meaning Gameweek 6’s Saturday and Sunday schedule is evenly split into five matches each.

However, just two of the five scheduled games will be aired live in the UK.

On Sunday at 14:00 (BST), four games begin. Although Brighton welcomes Bournemouth, Aston Villa travels to Chelsea, and Liverpool hosts West Ham, it is not surprise that broadcasters chose to show the north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham live.

The match between Chelsea and Villa was originally set for Saturday, but it was postponed to Sunday due to Unai Emery’s team’s participation in Europe’s third-tier league. In Poland on Thursday night, Legia Warsaw defeated the Villans 3-2.

The Blues are not participating in European competition this season after placing 12th in 2022–23, and new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who took over in the summer, is still trying to find his perfect starting eleven.

Liverpool and West Ham get an extra day of rest because they both played in the Europa League the day before their match at Anfield, while Brighton is in the same situation following their first-ever match in Europe, a shocking 3-2 loss to AEK Athens at the AMEX.

Four of the ten league games in the round will be broadcast live in the UK thanks to Sunday’s late encounter between Sheffield United and Newcastle at 16:30.

On Saturday, three games began at 15:00, with Crystal Palace holding Fulham to a 0-0 draw, Luton holding Wolves to a 1-1 draw, and Manchester City defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0. After those games, TV crews recorded away victories for Everton at Brentford and Manchester United at Burnley, respectively.

In Gameweek 7, the 12:30 game will return as Villa travel to Brighton before an exciting evening kickoff in which Liverpool visits Tottenham.
