The 27-year-old Blades midfielder and expert in marketing, advertising, and public relations passed away on Wednesday.
Prior to and during Sunday’s Premier League match against Newcastle, Sheffield United paid tribute to their former player Maddy Cusack.
A marketing officer for the Blades and a former England youth international, Cusack unfortunately went suddenly on Wednesday at the age of 27. She had played for the women’s squad.
Before the game, the two teams observed a moment of silence in her honor, and the player’s image was displayed on the stadium’s big screen.
Prior to the game, the Sheffield United players wore shirts with her name and the number (8), and her picture was on display in the locker room. After the first eight minutes of play, both sets of spectators applauded.
Before the game, Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley put a wreath in her honor outside the stadium along with notes from fans and floral tributes to the beloved athlete.
In the video, which Sheffield United posted on Saturday, Cusack, who recently took part in the unveiling of the Blades’ new uniform, can be seen grinning and laughing.
“Forever in our hearts, Mads,” the team wrote in a tweet that was sent out immediately before the game on Sunday.
“Everyone at Bramall Lane is devastated by this news. Stephen Bettis, the chief executive officer of Sheffield United, stated this week that Maddy had the rare position of being a part of several teams at the club and was much liked by everyone she interacted with.
“She will be sorely missed,” her relatives said of her. “Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family.”
The cause of her death is still under investigation, and the club has requested privacy at this time.
