Derby goalkeeper Josh Vickers pays emotional tribute to wife after announcing her death only four months after marriage

Josh Vickers, the goalkeeper for Derby, has paid a moving tribute to his late wife after revealing that she passed away from cancer less than four months after they wed.

The death of his wife Laura on Tuesday was announced by the 27-year-old former Lincoln and Rotherham goalkeeper on social media.

Vickers, who began his career at Arsenal, posted beside a photo of the pair on their wedding day: “I have written and unwritten this so many times and still can’t find the perfect words to say and don’t know if I ever will.

“On Tuesday night, my wife passed away after a protracted struggle with cancer…

“Laura is the most resilient, courageous, and kind person I’ve ever known. She never allowed anything stop her from enjoying herself and creating lifelong memories, smiling despite everything she was going through.

“We have worked through some difficult times by laughing, crying, and dancing.

“From the first time we met to the moment you went away quietly, I will treasure every second we spent together. I am confident that you are watching over me and will never stop motivating me.

“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me and both families get through this tremendously trying period. I’m so lucky to have such wonderful family and friends!

“I Will Love You Always & Forever.”

Following their 2-0 League One victory over Carlisle on Saturday, Vickers’ teammates from Derby showed their support by holding up his shirt, while the Rams and his former teams left condolence notes online.
