Frenkie de Jong had a high ankle sprain during Saturday’s La Liga match against Celta Vigo, according to Barcelona.
In the latter minutes of the first half against the Sky Blues, the Netherlands international had to be removed, and he appeared to be in a lot of pain.

Frenkie de Jong has a high right ankle sprain, according to tests. His availability will depend on how well he recovers, according to a statement on the Catalan side’s official website.
Despite persistent rumors that he could sign a new deal with Manchester United, De Jong has been a key player for Barcelona this season, scoring once in six games.
On Saturday, Barcelona was trailing 1-0 when De Jong left the field, but Xavi’s team came back to win 3-2 after going behind 2-0 in the 76th minute.
“You must compete and prevail when you don’t play well. Everything depended on the comeback. We had faith all the way through. We were terribly disorganized today, but we played with courage and belief,” Xavi remarked of the win that propelled his team to the top of the La Liga standings.
“Today’s (Saturday) game is a watershed. There are other topics than football. It has to do with character and having the winning mentality.
“Normally, a 0-2 loss at home would mean defeat, but this incredible bunch of young players is different. The transition between generations is clear.
We’ll go to bed as league champions. That is a good thing. We’ll be able to say that these three points helped us win the league when the season is over, hopefully.
The Barcelona manager said, when asked about De Jong’s injury immediately following the game: “De Jong requested to be subbed off. He has a wound, but we’re hoping it’s not too serious.
Frenkie de Jong is powerful, but more testing need to be done. If he was unable to go on, he must possess something.

When Barcelona resumes their La Liga campaign Tuesday night at Mallorca, they will be looking to make it seven straight victories across all competitions.
