Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle United have apparently reached an agreement on a new contract.
Since the conclusion of the 2022–23 season, Guimaraes has been negotiating a new contract with Newcastle, and he has now settled on one that runs through June 2028. The Brazilian signed a four-and-a-half year initial contract that ran through June 2026 when he transferred from Lyon to The Magpies in January 2022 for £40 million.
Newcastle and the 25-year-old have reportedly agreed to a new contract, which includes a release clause in the neighborhood of £100 million, according to transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano. “Let’s go! It’s finished,” Romano tweeted.
Guimaraes has stated repeatedly that he wants to stay at Newcastle, but when contract negotiations dragged on throughout the summer, he did voice some unhappiness with his predicament.
During the offseason, Guimaraes stated, “There is no [contract] news.” But the uncertainty persists, so let’s take a look.
Guimaraes previously acknowledged having ‘a conversation’ with Real Madrid last summer as the La Liga team searched to replace Casemiro. Furthermore, according to Spanish news reports, Newcastle turned down Liverpool’s £100 million summer transfer approach.
Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle, was questioned about the prospect of Guimaraes leaving the team during the transfer window.
Howe said at a press conference, “I don’t think Bruno wants to leave. “I believe we are well protected.
“Bruno is the most significant individual in this. He views this season as a tremendous opportunity for him to play on the biggest platform possible and try to aid Newcastle in developing.
The player’s perception of where his home is—I believe that is Newcastle—is what is most essential, not necessarily whether a club joins.
Since joining Newcastle, Guimaraes has scored 10 goals in 63 games, and he was a major contributor to the team’s last season’s Champions League qualification.
Newcastle just disclosed an extension of Callum Wilson’s contract, and it is rumored that they are in contract negotiations with Joelinton, a countryman of Guimaraes.
However, when asked twice about potential new contract terms during his pre-game press conference on Friday, Magpies manager Eddie Howe appeared to downplay them.
