A moment of magic from Bruno Fernandes helped Manchester United snap a run of three straight losses and move into the top half of the Premier League standings.

After surviving many near-misses from Burnley in the first half, captain Fernandes calmed manager Erik ten Hag’s concerns by volleying a Jonny Evans ball in the manner of Robin van Persie just before the half.

An adoring Rio Ferdiannd remarked on television, “That is what captains do. When you require something unique, they step up.

The victory for United was brave rather than convincing, but they’ll take it after a disastrous start to the year with a back-four made up entirely of backups due to injuries, with 35-year-old Evans being the most unexpected choice.

Even though Burnley, led by United’s former foe Vincent Kompany, may have felt wronged to be down a goal at the break, they now find themselves at the bottom of the standings after this loss.

Since Evans had re-signed with United in the summer, the Dutchman turned to him for his first Premier League start with the team since 2015.

To give a revamped midfield younger legs, Hannibal Mejbri and Scott McTominay were also added. Under Ralf Rangnick, the Tunisian’s lone prior United start came in 2022 against Crystal Palace.

Lyle Foster’s suspension required Zeki Amdouni to step into Lyle Foster’s hitting shoes for Burnley. Aaron Ramsey, who joined the team from Aston Villa in the summer, moved into midfield, forcing Amdouni farther forward.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for United in the first minute with a shot into the side netting. United looked sharp in their all-white uniform.Three things we learned as Manchester United get back to winning ways against Burnley | OneFootball

Rashford then provided a cross for Fernandes, whose powerful shot demanded the game’s first save.

Amdouni’s downward header looked destined for the corner until Onana jumped into action and swiped the ball away after Josh Brownhill and Conor Roberts combined down the right.

When Diogo Dalot had to foul Luca Koleosho to stop the Burnley winger from blasting past him, he was the game’s first official booking.

Vincent Kompany gives the home team an enthusiasm that United attempted to counter by tempo-setting with deliberate passing starting with Onana at the back.

However, Burnley was quite dangerous when they were close to the United penalty area.

Ramsey inserted Amdouni after 17 minutes, but even though he managed to get the ball past Onana, it rebounded off the inside of the post and missed the target.
