According to Phil Hay, he was “surprised” to see Willy Gnonto return to the field for Leeds United on Wednesday (20 September) after getting hurt against Hull City.
The Italian international “didn’t look great” while he was checking out his ankle on the side of the field, according to the Athletic journalist, who was speaking on The Square Ball podcast on Friday (September 22).
He said that the 19-year-old forward, who had been substituted by Crysencio Summerville just minutes earlier in the 0-0 game at the MKM Stadium, appeared likely to leave the pitch as soon as he got there.
“I was quite surprised that he came back on,” Hay remarked. “As he ran up and down the touchline, therapist Henry McStay advised him to jog briefly to test it out.
It didn’t look good, and as soon as he put it back on, you anticipated that it would take five minutes before he sat down and took it off, which is exactly what happened.
Gnonto finally having to leave the field appeared pretty much inescapable from the minute he went down.
He was down getting physiotherapy when he collided with Hull midfielder Regan Slater, and he was obviously in pain.
The forward attempted to play through the discomfort, but it never really appeared as though he would be able to continue, and he was eventually replaced.
From the moment Gnonto fell, it became very clear that he would be unsuccessful.He may not have further damaged his ankle when he briefly returned to the field, but it was a gamble that wasn’t worth taking.
The Dutchman impressed in his time off the bench against the Tigers, so Summerville will be ready to come in for him. The Whites will now be expecting to hear good news after he has been evaluated.
